Christmas Is Coming

Christmas Is Coming

“Christmas” being a shortened version of the title: “It’s Christmas Everywhere But Here,” which is now on the Coming Soon page at Dreamspinner Press. The release date is December 3, 2014, which is a heck of a lot closer than it should be, yow. I have been busy the last month and a half because I got a new job, and then had to do all the things that come with a new job, like finding an apartment and moving and racking up the credit card and dealing with a paycheck when direct deposit hasn’t kicked in and the holiday makes the mail all wonky. Have been knitting a little, writing less (boo) and mainly just trying to settle in and find a new routine. And Thanksgiving is next week and my book releases the week after that and holy...

Cover Reveal: It’s Christmas Everywhere But Here

Catt Ford has done an amazing job, and the cover for my next release is ready. Click the image below to go through to the full-sized view. Christmas brings dreams of peace, love, and family time for most. Sadly, Russell Moore isn’t so blessed. Since his coming out and marriage prompted a less-than-joyful reaction from his religious parents, Russ has kept his distance to avoid their conservative disapproval. With his husband David deployed overseas for the second Christmas in a row, Russ gives in to the loneliness and takes his stepchildren to meet his parents for the first time, hoping the “goodwill toward men” spirit will overcome his mother’s zealotry. But Russ’s Christmas joy is too quickly deflated by his mother’s unmet expectations, leaving Russ...

Editing is Cool

I am not an English Major. I did okay in my English classes, I think I have a pretty decent grasp of how to string words together, but it’s been a long time since I’ve diagrammed a sentence. I also overuse commas. Like, a LOT. I actually like the editing process, because it reminds me about those long-forgotten grammar rules, and teaches me stuff I didn’t know. For example, I recall being taught, that for names that end in ‘s’, you just put the apostrophe at the end, without an extra s. “Russ’ shoes” On the current round of edits, I learned that according to the Chicago Manual of Style1, either is technically correct, but the preference is to add the additional s: “Russ’s shoes” Word and...

Quick Notes for Weds

A week from now will be the cover reveal for It’s Christmas Everywhere But Here. Might as well put this out there: I’m job hunting. If you know anyone who needs a statistician with a computer science background, let me know! Have some cheeky British boys getting Ripped & Stripped for a calendar and “making of” video. If you like your calendars with a little more clothing, check out Yoga Men 2015. It is time for some website/theme maintenance. I will be fiddling with the website at some point over the next week or so. Also, due to Facebook’s recent bullshit, I am reconsidering having my author profile here at all. I haven’t made any firm decisions, but that may go away in the next bit. That’s it for...

Growing Up White Bread

The area I grew up was not, at the time, especially racially diverse. My high school yearbook is packed somewhere (if it didn’t get pitched in the last move) but I can recall only one African-American family (and one incident where a teacher said something horribly offensive) and other than a couple exchange students, I’m not recalling anyone who was Mexican-American. So, I find things like this article on racial origins by stirringwind on tumblr very important, and very personally helpful. In a lot of ways, I think our culture teaches us that melanin content = race, and that is not the case. And that’s something I’m trying to work on, as one of my goals is to be more inclusive as an author. I am trying to make my casts more racially...

The August Melt

The August Melt

It’s Monday, again. Whee. Newsworthy Things I have begun edits on a release for Dreamspinner Press: It’s Christmas Everywhere But Here, scheduled for release during the 2015 Holiday Season. Modified my Facebook page, so you should be able to Follow instead of needing to Friend. I am very much not-Facebook-saavy. Gotten my first-ever traffic ticket, for failing to pull over for a cop who was giving a ticket. It is justified, I just wish it hadn’t come when I was living off my savings. Had a couple good job interviews, so hopefully something will come from at least one of them soon. It is supposed to hit nearly 100° F here today. With thunderstorms. This is OREGON. WTF. Gay For You I read an article recently (that I of course cannot now find)...
